Mr David Dunlop MB ChB, FRCS, FRCS (Tr & Orth)
I qualified as a doctor from medical school in Birmingham in 1989. I then underwent further surgical training in Birmingham, Manchester and Vancouver before starting as a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham in 2001.
I specialise in lower limb arthroplasty surgery performing hip and knee replacements, revisions and resurfacings. My time in Vancouver particularly concentrated on revision or 'redo' hip and knee replacement surgery and was an opportunity to work with international leaders in this field. As both my NHS and private practice focuses on joint replacement surgery I do not perform any arthroscopic surgery.
I am very interested in the monitoring of outcomes after surgery and have been actively involved with the National Joint Registry (NJR) since it began in April 2003. I am currently the NJR Regional clinical coordinator for the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority. I am also interested in both the treatment of infected joint replacements but perhaps more importantly helping to avoid infection. Since I joined the Royal Orthopaedic hospital I have sat on the Infection control committee and am now the medical chairman of this.
I have published papers and a book chapter in the Medical literature and remain involved in medical research in the areas of improved bearing surfaces for joint replacements and the diagnosis and management of infection in joint replacements.
I currently operate at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, The BMI Birmingham Hospital and the Priory Hospital. I hold clinics at The Priory Sutton consulting suite at Ashfurlong and the BMI Birmingham Hospital in Edgbaston.
