Preperation for Surgery

Before your surgery

You will have been seen in a pre-assessment clinic at The Priory Hospital in the week before your surgery for an assessment of your general health. Some routine investigations may include an ECG trace of your heart and some blood tests which includes cross-matching of your blood in case you require a transfusion after your operation.

Please bring any x-rays you may have in your possession when you are admitted to hospital.

You will be admitted to a ward with a private room with en-suite facilities either the evening before or the morning of your operation. There is a named nurse who will be responsible for your needs. You should feel free to ask questions about your care whenever you like.

On the day of your surgery

We understand that this is a time of anxiety and worry, It would be highly unlikely is you were not concerned. However we pride ourselves in ensuring our patients are fully informed about their surgery and hospital stay. If there is anything you are unsure of we would always encourage you to ask.

You will be asked not to eat for six hours prior to your surgery. Your anaesthetist and surgeon will see you prior to your operation and will discuss any aspects of your operation that you are unsure about with you

When everything is ready for your operation, you will be taken to the anaesthetic room in the operating theatre complex where again you will be looked after by your surgeon and anaethetist as well as anaesthetic and surgical nurses. Your surgery will always be performed by the surgeon you saw at your initial consultation.
