Physiotherapy

You will be seen by the physiotherapist twice daily to show and supervise your exercises and speed your recovery. This will progress from on the first day standing to walking with a Zimmer frame. You will be fully weight bearing through your new hip unless your surgeon has specified otherwise.

With each day your level of activity will increase. You will be allowed to sit out of bed on the second day after surgery in most cases. Very quickly you will progress to using two sticks and once independent and able to manage stairs you will be safe to go home. This will usually be 5-6 days after surgery.

You may have some physiotherapy sessions arranged for you as an out-patient if it is felt you need some further help.

For the first two to three weeks after surgery you will need to use two sticks to walk around your house, and after this you can move to one stick for a week or two so that by the 5th or 6th week you can manage in your home without sticks. Out of the house you should use sticks for the first five weeks but then as you confidence increases you can go down to one stick. By the 5th week after your surgery you should be trying to walk ½ mile a day.
