Anaesthesia for Hip Surgery
The anaesthetic used for hip surgery usually involves a combination of general and local anaesthesia techniques. This helps to provide a rapid recovery from the anaesthetic and to reduce the risk of complications. Some patients mat not be suitable for this combination and either a general or a local anaesthetic would be used on its own.
Your anaesthetist works closely with your surgeon and will visit you before your operation. They will enquire about your medical history and discuss any previous anaesthetics. They will plan your anaesthetic care with you. This will include the type of anaesthetic that will be used, what to expect in the recovery period and the type of pain relief that will be used after the operation.
Further information on anaesthesia can be obtained from - www.youranaesthetic.info - this website provides general information about different techniques of anaesthesia and what to expect in theatre. If you wish to obtain further information, Dr Shinner and Dr Owen-Smith will be able to provide this.
