Anaesthetist Profiles


Dr Owen-Smith and Dr Shinner are the principal anaesthetists for the Birmingham Hip Clinic. They are both full time anaesthetists working at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and were appointed in 1999.

Dr Oliver Owen-Smith  MBBS,FRCA

Oliver qualified in London. He undertook his anaesthetic training in Huntingdon, Sheffield and Leicester where he was involved in research into orthopaedic anaesthesia. He has  particular interests in the use of anaesthetic techniques to reduce pain after surgery and in the use of methods to prevent the need for a blood transfusion.

Dr Guy Shinner  MBBS,FRCA

Guy qualified in London and undertook his anaesthetic training in London and Reading. He has special interests in local anaesthetic techniques, blood transfusion and anaesthesia for the elderly.
